Millions of people are afflicted with knee joint pain at some point in their lives. However, most knee-related pain symptoms do not lead to surgery. Then why do people opt for knee replacement surgery? What are the factors that lead to this surgical decision?

Complications that Require Knee Replacement

Serious knee injury or bone conditions such as osteoarthritis can cause inflammation and pain, arresting your mobility and disrupting your daily activities You may be unable to flex or extend the knees and slowly over a period of time, it can advance to deterioration of the knee joint and surrounding tissue. This can have a negative effect on your normal life.

Knee replacement surgery is the most ideal solution for this type of knee deterioration. Knee replacement is known to provide phenomenal relief to patients. The surgical procedure is mainly done to replace defective knees, damaged due to medical conditions such as degenerative arthritis.

The decision to go ahead with the surgery depends on the advice of your orthopaedic doctor. The good news is that almost 95 percent of people who have undergone the surgical procedure for knee replacement feel a significant improvement in their mobility and experience reduced pain symptoms.

Knee Replacement Surgery

Arthroplasty or knee replacement surgery is carried out to replace or change the damaged knee parts with artificial parts. Millions of people in the world enjoy quality lives after undergoing successful knee implants.

When Surgical Knee Replacement is Required

It becomes necessary to opt for knee replacement surgery in cases wherein the knee joint is totally worn-out and is damaged to a great extent. You may experience constant pain and your movements become very limited.

Reasons to go in for Knee Replacement Operation include:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Haemophilia
  • Gout
  • Unusual growth of the bones or bone dysplasias
  • Avascular necrosis
  • Grave knee injury
  • Deformity in the knee followed by pain and cartilage loss

There are three steps to a knee replacement surgery:

  1. Preparation

Before the surgery, your complete medical history and physical examination including X-Ray and blood test are carried out. The tests help the doctor figure out the nature of your knee problem. You also need to tell the doctor about any prescription medicines that you are taking regularly and previous history of bleeding or infections (if any). Just before the surgery, your orthopaedic surgeon in Dubai may advise you to fast for eight hours.

  1. Surgery

Nowadays, knee replacement operation in Dubai has become very advanced. Most of the surgical procedure cases are considered as outpatient procedures minus the hospital stay. You can also opt for a surgical procedure that involves hospital stay for 1 to 3 days. An intravenous line or IV is inserted into the vein for feeding fluids and liquid medicines.

Depending on your health and knee problem, the doctor can suggest general anaesthesia or epidural anaesthesia. Surgery may take a couple of hours, which again is subject to the type of surgery determined by the surgeon.

There are two surgical procedures that can be adopted:

  1. a) Putting artificial knee implants making longer cuts by taking out the damaged joint part.
  2. b) Using minimal invasive technique with shorter cuts. A young and healthy patient may be considered for minimally invasive surgery.
  1. Post Surgery

After the surgery, you can walk with the help of a walker, crutches, or a walking stick. There will be a noticeable improvement in your flexibility and lesser knee pain symptoms. Doctors may advise you to do physiotherapy exercises to reduce the swelling and to strengthen core muscles.

You can take assistance from a reputed physical therapist for your knee treatment post surgery. Physical therapy is essential to fortify the repaired knee and recover from the surgery in a confident manner.

Total Knee Replacement

Total knee replacement is a surgical procedure wherein the affected knee joint is restored with artificial material. When a total knee replacement takes place, a part of the femur bone is separated and removed. It is then replaced with a metallic shell. The tibia or lower leg bone is also removed and changed with a metallic stem and plastic piece. These artificial components are known as prosthesis.

Bone specialists specialize in diseases and traumas that affect the musculoskeletal system. An orthopaedic doctor plays a very important role in knee treatment through correct diagnosis and taking proper care of the patient suffering from musculoskeletal conditions.

If you suffer from bone-related issues such as arthritis, have severe pain in the knee joint and also experience difficulty in walking, then it is best to fix an appointment with a bone and joint doctor near you.
